Wednesday Home Tour: The set design of “The Holiday”

I know that the holidays are over but I love that I was able to see this movie this past week. “The Holiday”…I have seen this movie just a few times now. I really love how the characters are so different from one another. One is very career determent and doesn’t shed a tear for a man while the other is so insecure and let’s people walk over her especially a specific man. What I loved most about the movie was their homes: both very different yet I could imagine myself living in both. One very cozy located in a village in England and the other contemporary located in LA of course.

Even though Iris’s house doesn’t exist in real life I really love the exterior.

Let’s move into the interiors.

This is Iris’s cozy, eclectic living room. Lots of patterns and color. The natural stone on the fireplace wall. I really like the wood beams on the ceiling.

Compared to Amanda’s very contemporary neutral living room. Solid colors the only pattern I see is on the rug.

Moving on to the kitchen

Amanda’s enormous kitchen with the state of the art appliances. Of course a formal dining room.

The bedrooms: I love the fireplace in Iris’s bedroom but I am not a big fan of the bed frame. I have to go with Amanda’s bed frame here. I really love the simplicity of her room.

Let’s end with the bathroom.

Iris’s bathroom is small

While Amanda’s is big. Isn’t it interesting how both have a soak tub and almost the same bath tub filler?

Have you seen the movie? Which house would you prefer to live if given the choice?

Happy Wednesday!

The Good Wife

I love watching “The Good Wife” on CBS. It has great plot line, the show is about a politician’s wife, Alicia, who takes charge of her life when her husband is caught in very public political scandal that lends him to jail in Season 1. In Season 2 her husband is out of jail running for district attorney while Alicia is trying to live a somewhat normal life. If you would like to read the whole plot, you can read it here.

Set Decorator Beth Kushnick did a fantastic job. The flow of the space is open yet each room is separated from each other. The French doors are great if you would like privacy and give the space character. This is what Beth had to say about the small details about creating the sets: “As a set decorator I think it is all about the details! Even though things like a collection of fortunes from fortune cookies placed in a bowl in the kitchen (which was my eight-year-old daughter's contribution) or bedside table junk in the bedroom (coins, a random earring, a chiropractor’s business card) most likely will never be seen on screen, they give life to the sets and I find them very necessary to complete the lived-in feeling.”

This is Alicia’s living room. I like how Beth used different pieces to create an eclectic look and it feels very welcoming with the bookcase wall.

Alicia’s dining room. This is suppose to be a deep eggplant color but it shows as gray on the photo.

THE GOOD WIFE

Alicia’s kitchen. Clean lines, two tones colors for the cabinetry give the space a contemporary look. Isn’t the glass frosted tile used as a backsplash great? And who doesn’t love a wine cooler in they kitchen.

Alicia’s bedroom. I like the colors and the rail detail used in this bedroom. The picture doesn’t give it justice but the bed lines have a grain pattern detail to them. I love the mirror vanity as well. I do have to say that the bedroom feels that is staged as for a model home.

If you would like to find out more information about the products used on the show, you can check it out on CBS’s website where the designer talks all about it.  If you ever get a chance to see the show you will be able to get a better tour of the place. I wouldn't mind living there. It feels very welcoming to me.

Movie Set Tuesday

Can you tell I took an extra long weekend? Things at my house have been hectic for the past few weeks and I am just trying to do the best I can on all fronts. Hopefully it will get better soon.

This past weekend it was raining cats and dogs here in Orange County. I lived in Seattle, WA for about eight year and I visit about every two months since my family still lives there. The rain doesn’t bother me in Seattle, but for some reason after few hours of rain in CA I get grumpy. I wonder why? Oh, yeah, getting to my point, since it was raining all weekend I felt like watching a movie, possibly a comedy. I have seen so many previews for “Life as we know it” and I thought it was a comedy, so wrong. I spent the whole   most of the duration of the movie crying. Without giving too much of the movie away if you are a parent of a young child just be warned it is a very very sad movie, make sure you have enough Kleenex on hand.

Anyways, I loved the house that the movie. This colonial house is set in Atlanta. Is it just me that is being bothered by the big tree right in the middle of the photo blocking some of the house view. If it was my home I would of chopped it down by now.

This is a photo of the real house. The house was listed for sale and here is the listing.

Some bloggers have stated that the movie house it’s very “Pottery Barn” style. I would have to agree but I loved it. I loved the simplicity of the design and the architectural details of the house. It feels warm and welcoming even if I wanted to see a little more color.

Who wouldn’t love this kitchen? It is so big and roomy, I can live in there. I love the white cabinets and although its only a set I love how bright it looked. I like that you step down to get to the kitchen, it make is a little more interesting.

Here is the actual house’s kitchen. It is a little traditional for my taste, but I love the dark stain on the cabinets.

This is the living room in the real house. The architectural detail of the ceiling gives the house a great character.

They changed the fireplace for the movie. I actually like the stone better than the brick.

This sunroom is calling my name. All I need is some sweet ice tea and a book.

I have to say I also liked "Holly"'s wordrobe that they chose for the movie; very relaxed and casual, yet somewhat girly. Happy Tuesday!
