Wednesday Home Tour: Resse Witherspoon’s Ojai Home

Resse Witherspoon is a good actress. I do not have a favorite actress but if I do she would be one of them. I can watch “Sweet Home Alabama” over and over again. So when I saw her on the cover of the September issue of Elle Decor I dived right in to check out her home.

I love the charm of the home but at the same time I feel that it need a little bit of color.Of course to each their own. What I love the most are the grounds and the terrace. I am a huge sucker for outdoor living.  The house used to belong to a designer you might of heard of…Kathryn Ireland…Kathryn is big on color and patterns which shows in the interior of the house.

If you had the choice would you choose the more neutral colors decor or the over the top color decor? I know that that’s too much color for me and I would go with Resse’s interior choices.

The Barcelona Chair

Long time ago during one of my design classes we learned about the Barcelona Chair. The chair was designed by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and his partner Lilly Reich in 1929. The chair has a timeless design that would fit any contemporary, transitional, casual interior. The chair has its signature’s white or black leather but can be bought in array of different color leathers. I love this chair, sat in it and would love to have it.

The real thing will set you back at least $7000 but you can find a knock off for less than $1000 which is still not in my budget.  What do you think of the Barcelona chair?

Wednesday Home Tour: A Light filled Colonial style home

This adorable home was found within the pages of the March issue of “This Old House”. It is picture perfect with the white window trim and white picked fence located in California’s Silicon Valley. While the facade evokes traditional Colonial style, the interior suggest late 1980s McMansion. The pallet is the house is light with a pop of color.

The homeowner, Emily Kelly, had a pretty clear idea of what she wanted. “I’m a total decision-maker” she says and is no amateur when it comes to Googling home accessories or searching sites like Pinterest. To accomplish her mission she hired interior designer Carolyn Woods.

House Tour: A 1,400 square feet cottage

Being away from home for a long time means that I will have hard time catching up on all of my magazines. Currently I receive 14 a month.  Anyways I was going through some of my magazines and I came to this beauty, a 12-page spread on a 1,400 square feet cottage in Mountain Brook village, Birmingham, Alabama. The architect, the talented Bill Ingram.

Bill’s design philosophy: "When you see something perfect, buy it.  If you don't have a place for it, you're going to have to force yourself, but eventually you'll wind up with a house full of things you love."

House Tour: Jill Johnson’s “Labor of Love”

There are so many magazines and blogs out there that it’s hard to catch up and see it all. This was originally posted in Coastal Magazine over a year ago but I am just now seeing it. A Manhattan Beach designer, Jill Johnson remade a rental mess into her dream cottage, one room at a time. Jill, a former clothing designer, worked twelve years before transitioning into interior design. Her background in fabrics and print design can be seen in her ability to combine unexpected patterns, colors, and period pieces into the home.

“I would say my personal look is "cleaned-up eclectic." I like my upholstered pieces to have very clean almost modern, lines―nothing that looks too old-fashioned. But I like to mix in vintage pieces and flea market finds, as well. “

“We utilized every last inch of the house by creating seating nooks out of pass-through spaces, like the built-in sofa opposite the island in the kitchen. That used to be part of the living room. There are hardly any closets, so we also built out every last nook with drawers for storage. “

“We sacrificed our crawlspace attic for pitched ceilings in as may rooms as possible. Just that extra couple of feet in terms of ceiling height made rooms seem so much larger. We also added windows and skylights wherever we could to bring in more natural light. “

Pretty, right? I love the clean, timeless and simple style. It is very comfortable.

Aside her beautiful home, Jill and her design partner, Suzanne Ascher collaborated their eclectic design styles to create Waterleaf. Located in the heart of Manhattan Beach, Waterleaf blends a unique mix of vintage pieces, designer bedding along with a modern coastal mix of furniture, art and unique accessories.

If you are local to the area you should check it out. I think I will have to make the time to stop by one of these days.

Bursts of color

Happy Monday everyone!

Right before I left on my vacation I was very pleased to see lots of color in this 1960s beach house designed by Mona Ross Berman. Since we still have few more weeks of summer let’s celebrate it with color. Give me a week and then we can talk fall!
