The first time I saw a yarn ball being used for decoration was on Martha Stewart’s Christmas special about four or five years ago. Over the years I have see it used from party decor to everyday decor.
Since you are the one making the balls the choices are unlimited when it comes to size and color.
DIY Instruction
1. Blow up balloons to different sizes, and try to mold them into spheres as you blow them up. We used regular party balloons that you can find at the store, but you can search online for larger balloons as well. Tie the balloons instead of knotting them.
2. Mix Elmer's Glue (the basic white glue) with water in a bowl. We recommend adding a little bit of water at a time so prevent the mixture from becoming too thin. The end result should be similar to the consistency of paint.
3. This next step is just like paper mache. Pick out any yarn of your choice and dip the yarn into the glue mixture. Wrap the yarn around the balloons until you've reached your desired look.
4. Hang the wrapped balloons from the knot to dry. It may take a day or two for them to dry completely. Once dry, the balloons will fill stiff. I have read on a few blogs that can take up to 24 hours to dry.
5. Try to separate the balloon from the yarn by pushing the balloon. Slowly let the air out of the balloons by untying the tie (rather than popping them) and continue to gently separate the yarn from the balloon's surface.
Easy, right?
I have been wanting to make a yarn ball chandelier for a very long time but never know where to place it once it’s done. I was even contemplating to put one in my daughter’s room but the tissue pom poms won.
These are really neat. My Mom use to use these to make Easter Bunnies every year, so there are many uses for the Yarn Ball. Very fun and easy to make! I'll have to give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteI think these are pretty awesome, but the asthetic of my house isn't quite as modern as these little babies! They look completely awesome lit up, though...how rad would it be to make a ton of these and light them for a cute backyard wedding??? The wheels in my head are turning...
